Cold Weather Sleeping Bags - the Advantages of Down

Down is the optimal, high-end filling used in warm sleeping bags. It offers a variety of advantages over synthetic alternatives that make it the go-to choice when choosing sleeping bags for adults about to face challengingly low temperatures.

Down is renowned for its exceptional ability to trap body heat, ensuring unparalleled warmth throughout the night, even in the harshest conditions. However, down’s warmth-retention isn’t the only factor making it a superb choice. It is also a highly breathable material, meaning that while it keeps us perfectly warm even in cold, high-altitude camping scenarios, it also prevents perspiration from causing discomfort and disrupting its insulating properties.

Lastly, the indisputable advantage of down is its low weight, compressibility, and reliable lofting. These factors are of paramount importance during exhausting climbs, reducing both the load and volume of our backpacks.

Parameters - What to Pay Attention to While Choosing a Warm Sleeping Bag

Cut, form, weight, and aesthetics are important factors to consider when choosing a suitable product, however, in order to ensure choosing the best sleeping bag for cold weather, we especially recommend paying attention to the following technical parameters:

Fill Power - which is measured in cubic inches, often referred to as cuins, is used to determine the volume of lofted down used in the product. The higher the FP rating the higher the insulating properties a winter down sleeping bag offers. Hence, choosing the adequate level of Fill Power is of utmost importance as it will guarantee that our chosen product will offer adequate protection for the level of cold we expect to encounter on our adventures.

Down-to-feather Ratio - displayed next to the fill power rating of a product, the down-to-feather ratio, represented as, e.g., 95/5, 90/10, etc. The numbers provided denote the percentile contents of down and feathers, respectively. Each backpacking winter sleeping bag is filled with a combination of both, as the feathers reduce the potential clumping of down, ensuring, in turn, greater loft.

Temperature Range - marked as T-Comf, T-Limit, and T-Extreme, these parameters indicate the lowest temperatures in which women (T-Comf) and men (T-Limit) may still feel comfortable while sleeping, as well as the absolute lowest temperature (T-Extreme), in which the sleeping bag still offers some degree of cold protection for the user.

To better portray this, we will use PAJAK’s most robust RADICAL 16H Winter Sleeping Bag, the ultimate choice for sleeping in extreme cold, which ensures comfortable sleep for women in temperatures as low as -31°C, for men -43°C, and the absolute lowest threshold ending at -71°C.
